Fake Messages

15 November, 2023

Welcome to the third day of our International Fraud Awareness Week. Today, we tackle ‘Fake Messages’ – a scam tactic where fraudsters send deceptive text messages pretending to be from trusted organizations, such as your Credit Union.

Fraudsters use a technique called ‘spoofing’ to make it look like you are being contacted by a trusted organization.

They can disguise email addresses, display names, phone numbers, text messages, or website URLs to convince you that they are a reputable source.

These scam calls or texts can often appear in genuine message threads, making them difficult to spot.

The fake messages typically urge you to click on a link or call a phone number to “verify“, “update“, or “reactivate” your account. However, these links lead to bogus websites, and the phone numbers connect to fraudsters pretending to be legitimate representatives.

The goal is to trick you into disclosing personal, financial, or security information, which they can then use to access your accounts and steal your money.

Your Credit Union will NEVER send you a text message containing a link and asking you to disclose personal details or share PINs/Passwords for your debit card or online banking. If you receive such a message, delete it immediately and review your Current Account & Debit Card transactions.

If you suspect that you’ve been targeted by a ‘Fake Message’ scam, or if you have any concerns about your Current Account or Debit Card activity, please contact our Credit Union Card Services on +353(1)6933333 immediately.
